Make your own oatmeal! Recipe

We love oatmeal! It’s a backpacker’s staple breakfast food. Instead of buying your oatmeal from the store, consider making your own from scratch!  Below is the recipe I use for making oatmeal from home.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup quick oats
2.5 Tbs powdered rolled oats*
1 Tbs dry milk powder
A pinch of salt
1 Tbs brown sugar

How to prepare:

*Powdered oats: take a few cups of rolled oats and blend into a powder using an automatic blender.

Once complete, follow the ingredients list and combine into storage containers of your choice. That’s it! When you are ready to use, just add hot water. The amount of water you use depends on the consistency of oatmeal you enjoy most. Let sit for five minutes.

Variations:

Apples and Cinnamon
1/4 tsp cinnamon
2 Tbs diced/dried apples

S’mores Oatmeal
8-10 mini marshmallows
1 Tbs chocolate chips

Some of you might be wondering why we put the rolled oats through a blender. By doing this, a very creamy consistency of the oatmeal is achieved. Additionally, by blending the rolled oats cooking time is reduced to match the speed of traditional quick oats. If you have the time, try dehydrating your own fruit. I find doing this is much more rewarding. Plus, I load my oatmeal with dried apples or other berries. These recipes are just the starting point for what you can do with your “made-from-scratch-oatmeal”. Once you start you won’t be able to stop. The flexibility might keep you from ever buying a store-bought package of oatmeal again!
